Several suggestions: Get issues #20, 21, 22 of Electric Radio magazine, for a series of three articles called "Update that Super-Pro." Topics include better stability, adding a detector for SSB, and better sensitivity. (All back issues available for $3.25 each (in the U.S.) from ER, 14643 County Road G, Cortez, Colorado, 81321-9575.) W7FG Vintage Manuals has a manual designated "SP-600 Set" which is a compilation of several documents covering operation, maintenance and repair, schematic, parts list, etc. Check them out at www.w7fg.com. Chuck Rippel has produced a 4-hour video on SP-600 repair, restoration and mods. Available from the ER bookstore (same address as above) for $89.95. As to tube substitutions, I have had good luck using a 6GU5 in place of the first RF amp, for vastly improved signal-to-noise ratio. Someone has noted that the original tube is a remote cutoff tube, while the 6GU5 is not; but I haven't had any problem with that. You need to check whether your radio has the dreaded black tubular capacitors. There are many reports that these split and leak, degrading the performance of the receiver and (maybe?) creating a fire hazard. General consensus is that they all have to be replaced, which is not an easy job. Some of the later receivers were made with disc ceramic capacitors instead, which is a great blessing if you have it. (I don't have Rippel's video, but I understand he covers replacement.) Finally, the folks on this website are very helpful if you run into a particular problem.
